Hard Environmental Choices: Comparability, Justification and the Argument from Moral Identity

In decision-making based on multiple criteria, situations may arise where agents find their options to be neither better than, worse than nor equal each other with respect the relevant criteria. How, if at all, can a justified choice made between such options? Are incomparable? This article explores hypothetical case that illustrates how situation in an environmental context; more specifically, it considers deliberations of imagined 'ethics committee' as struggles decide whether or not deep-sea mining project should allowed proceed. I argue is best understood involving are comparable sense being 'on par'. Working out from discussion Ruth Chang's 'self-governance' theory cases parity, suggest that, context, idea choices expressing moral identity lead us direction plausible solution these particularly challenging cases.
